Chorao meet gives nod for3 cell towers on island

Panaji: Goa’s largest riverine island of Chorao adverse putting in place of mobile towers previously, but on Sunday, the islanders licensed three of them, together with two in crematoriums.
A special gram sabha chaired by sarpanch Pandhari Vernekar were convened to discuss the issue and the contributors suggested three locations around the island. “Two have been suggested in crematoriums in Pandavaddo within the northern part of the island and Maddel within the south,” an islander told TOI on Sunday.

While one of the vociferous warring parties of mobile towers was once now not present on Sunday, the verdict was once supported by islanders below the banner of United Citizens of Chorao.

“We welcome the mobile towers as after a few years of struggling because of non-availability of right kind communique, we felt it was once the need of the hour,” a former sarpanch of Chorao-Maddel panchayat Shrikrishna Haldankar mentioned.

The third in Saude, Gavona, is sought to be cited within the central part of the island that stretches about 10km from the ferry point overlooking Ribandar to the north.


The scenic island with an undulating topography and the south-western part of it below Dr Salim Ali chook sanctuary has two ferry issues within the south and in opposition to north-western part.


The temple committee of a devasthan at Maddel has already issued permission for the proposal.


“All the locations are in hilly spaces and now not too on the subject of residential spaces,” Haldankar mentioned.
