NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) on Friday announced polls to 58 Rajya Sabha seats which can fall vacant in April this 12 months. Polling for the 58 seats shall be held on March 23.
The time period of office of 58 participants of the Upper House, elected from 16 states, is due to expire upon their retirement in April-May 2018 .
The vacancies to be crammed are 10 seats from Uttar Pradersh, six each from Bihar and Maharashtra; five each from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh; 4 each from Gujarat and Karnataka; three each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Rajasthan; two from Jharkhand; and one seat each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Members whose phrases are finishing include union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan, J P Nadda, Thaawarchand Gehlot and Ramdas Athawale.
Besides the biennial elections, the EC additionally announced bypoll to a Rajya Sabha seat from Kerala after M P Veerendra Kumar resigned in December. His time period was once to finish in April 2022.
