Land row: Utkal University students try to torch ambulance parked in campus

BHUBANESWAR: Students of Utkal University on Friday attempted to torch an ambulance parked in entrance of the vice-chancellor's office right here protesting the state government's plan to allocate 30 acres of Utkal University land for status quo of second campus of Ramadevi Women's University.
A group of students at around 1.30 pm ransacked the ambulance and then threw a burning cardboard at the vehicle. A small portion of the vehicle's roof were given affected, but the police deployed in the campus instantly reached the spot and doused the fireplace. Timely intervention of the police saved the vehicle, said a senior police officer.


The vehicle used to be apparently lying defunct right through final two months, resources said.


Later the students locked up the primary gate of the executive block demanding roll back of the verdict of allocating land to RD University's second campus. "We will continue the agitation in the campus till the state government cancels the order," said Ratan Digal, an agitating pupil.


The stir started in the campus since January 31 after the state government issued a notification on January 30 to set up a committee to spot 30 acres of land of Utkal University for allotment to the second one campus of RD Women's University.


Even faculty contributors and non-teaching staff additionally supported the motion of the students. "We have written a letter to the higher education department to reconsider the decision to demarcate land from our university. The government should end the stalemate by taking a positive step," said Santosh Kumar Tripathy, president of Utkal University lecturers' affiliation.
