BHUBANESWAR: BJP contestant Ashok Panigrahi filed his nomination papers on Friday for the Bijepur bypoll scheduled on February 24.
While the BJD has already announced its nominee Rita Sahu will report her papers on February five, the Congress continues to be grappling with infighting in deciding on its candidate.
The BJP organised a public assembly at Padampur where Panigrahi filed his nominations ahead of the returning officer at the sub-collector workplace there. Panigrahi, who represented BIjepur within the assembly on a BJD price tag, had joined the BJP in October last year.
BJP common secretary and Odisha prabhari (in-charge) Arun Singh, birthday party's state unit president Basanta Panda and Legislature Party chief KV Singhdeo addressed the assembly and accompanied Panigrahi filing the nominations.
The Congress is but to finalise its candidate. Party insiders stated it is likely to announce a reputation on February five, a day ahead of the last date to report nominations on February 6.
Sources stated although the birthday party had almost finalised Pranay Sahu (Gaisilat block vice-chairman), a section within the birthday party is pushing for Ripunath Seth, who had won the seat on a Congress price tag in 1995.
"This is the reason why a second committee under former chief minister Hemand Biswal was formed through another committee led by MLA Naba Kishore Das had already given a report in support of Sahu," a Congress chief stated.
Congress MLA Naba Kishore Das stated the six-member committee headed through Biswal, which was once entrusted to recommend prospective names for the bypoll, has recommended names of Pranay Sahu and Ripunath Seth. The birthday party leadership will finalise one name quickly.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Prasad Harichandan stated there is not any infighting in birthday party regarding the Bijepur candidate. "Bijepur is a Congress ground. The party will announce the most suitable candidate in time," he stated.
Subal Sahu of the Congress, whose demise on August 22 necessitated the making sure byelection, represented the seat in the past 3 phrases.
