NEW DELHI: Opposition events on Tuesday boycotted Rajya Sabha in the post-lunch session, protesting Chairman Venkaiah Naidu's decision to adjourn complaints for an extended period because of disruptions, announcing their voice was being muzzled in Parliament.
With the opposition maintaining away, Naidu defended his decision and said he was deeply thinking about detrimental belief in the public because of repeated adjournments and that of the 42 0 hour submissions admitted in the last three operating days, only one could be made. Sufficient warnings were issued sooner than the House was adjourned until afternoon, he said.
Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad led the rate and said Parliament worked in keeping with "rules, regulations, procedures and conventions" and no longer "according to one's whims".
He was supported by way of other opposition leaders, together with Samajwadi Party's Naresh Agarwal, Trinamool Congress's Derek O'Brien and CPM's Tapan Sen. Deputy chairman P J Kurien said the chair's choices could no longer be questioned in the House and aggrieved members should meet him in the chamber.
At this, an enraged Azad introduced that the opposition was boycotting the House for the day and all of the opposition walked out. Kurien adjourned the House until three pm.
MPs from Congress, TMC, NCP, DMK, Samajwadi Party, CPM, CPI and AAP stayed away from the House when complaints resumed at three pm after two adjournments all over the day.
In his remarks later in the day, Naidu said, "Leaders of several parties have conveyed their anguish to me over how they are being deprived of their right to raise issues of concern to them as some parties strategise for disruptions leading to forced adjournments."
