Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of students, academics and body of workers of Utkal University on Thursday staged protest and blocked National Highway-5 opposing Odisha executive's determination to arrange second campus of Ramadevi Women's University inside their campus. Vehicular movement disrupted at the NH for a few hours as the students burnt tyres and sat on dharna at the street in front of the primary gate of the college. One platoon power has been deployed at the campus to care for law and order.
The agitating students demanded the federal government to withdraw the decision right away and dissolve the committee shaped to spot land within the campus.
"This is such a weird and impractical proposal and cannot be accepted at any cost. By setting up second campus of another university inside Utkal University campus the government is going to squeeze the growth of both the varsities. If the decision will not be withdrawn immediately, the protests will be intensified and may take violent turns," mentioned an agitating scholar.
The students associations called a day-long 'Utkal Bandh', which was once supported by means of the associations of academics and workers of the college. They additionally submitted a memorandum to the governor and leader minister on this regard.
"We have no objection if the government provides 30 acres or 300 acres to RD Women's University but no land from Utkal University campus will be given for this purpose," mentioned J K Panda, an employee of the university.
The students proposed there are four to five patches of land with more than 30 acres nearby to arrange second campus of the RD Women's University, which was once upgraded to a university in 2015.
Sources mentioned, in 2016 Odisha executive had allocated 30 acres land at Daspur in the outskirts of the city to RD Women's University for a second campus but the varsity government refused the proposal mentioning security and distance problems.
