Air traffic chaos after Hyd tyre burst exposes serious lack of coordination

CHENNAI: A tyre-burst thattook place in far off Hyderabad airport created standard chaos over the skies of Chennai and Bengaluru, which affected loads of flyers and uncovered a lack of coordination between airports that would end up critical, even deadly, in an emergency.
As the crippled IndiGo ATR plane sat at the Hyderabad runway for hours, air visitors control diverted many global and red-eye home flights drawing near the country’s fourth busiest airport to Bengaluru and Chennai. What adopted used to be 5 hours of mayhem from 10.30pm.

The Chennai airport took on most of the diverted flights — 34 further flights landed within the city — as Bengaluru’s air house used to be too congested. Bengaluru also diverted four scheduled flights to Chennai.

This brought about stressful moments for pilots scouting for airports to land. Passengers in behind schedule flights, meanwhile, spent the evening aboard the plane.

A pilot said there used to be confusion as flights hovered over Bengaluru for more than 10 mins earlier than they were diverted them to Chennai within the hope of discovering a touchdown slot.

A few Chennai-Hyderabad and Bengaluru-Hyderabad flights had to return; flights to Hyderabad from Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore were also rerouted to Chennai.

“Multiple diversions of planes and flights returning halfway displays loss of coordination between airports although those airports have automatic and manual facilities like airport operations control centres (AOCCs). Diverting flights to Bengaluru, which used to be congested used to be dangerous,” he added.

Though AOCCs are available on the airports in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru, there used to be little details about floor delays. Chennai controlled well even though there used to be power on air visitors control with many plane queuing as much as land.

“The government should think about alternate airports,” a senior pilot said. “Begumpet airport is lying unused in Hyderabad and the HAL airport isn't used for business flights in Bengaluru. These two airports might be readied for dealing with diversions all over such emergencies.”
