MYSURU : In an unlucky incident, a 40-year-old animal keeper at the Mysuru Zoo lost three toes on his right leg when he was attacked through a crocodile on Tuesday. The mishap befell when Puttaswamy slipped and fell into the pond he was cleaning at the crocodile enclosure.
The moment Puttaswamy fell into the pond, the crocodile grabbed his right leg, and he lost three of his toes consequently. His colleague Rakesh, on seeing Puttaswamy in trouble, rushed and rescued the latter with the assistance of a picket pole. Puttaswamy additionally sustained accidents on his left palm, when he was looking to free himself through pushing the crocodile’s snout.

While the zoo guide stipulates that two workers handle cleaning activities at all enclosures as a precautionary measure, Puttaswamy and Rakesh made up our minds to separate up and work at other ponds, in order that they might whole their work early. However, things took a tragic turn.

The mishap befell late on Tuesday night, after the zoo was closed to the general public.


Chairperson of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka Mallige Veeresh informed TOI, “It is unlucky that a worker was injured in a freak twist of fate. Puttaswamy is a talented worker, and has been operating in the crocodile enclosure for the past two-and-a-half years. From what we all know, we have now learnt that he lost his balance and slipped into the pond.”


Mallige added that the crocodile that attacked Puttaswamy was one-eyed, and was born in Mysuru. “Just as another animal would react, the crocodile too attacked the ‘intruder’ to give protection to itself. The zoo will handle Puttaswamy’s medical expenses. This is in all probability the first such incident at the crocodile enclosure this is well-protected and fenced,” she mentioned.


On the opposite hand, managing director of the Shanthaveri Gopal Gowda Hospital Dr Santhrupth, where Puttaswamy is undergoing remedy, mentioned that the zoo employee was out of threat. “The surgical operation was a success, and he has been shifted to a ward. Puttaswamy will be capable of walk most often as soon as the injuries have healed,” mentioned the doctor.
