MUMBAI: A stationery manufacturing corporate used to be defrauded of Rs 13 lakh in what is suspected to be a case of spear phishing. An worker of the company, having its corporate headquarters at Goregaon East, has lodged a complaint with the Vanrai police.
On March 15, the complainant, Navneet Agarwal, 40, gained an e mail purportedly from the CEO of the company. The mail urged Agarwal to transfer a sum of Rs 13.22 lakh from the company's bank account to an account with any other private financial institution. "Agarwal did as instructed between 10.17am and 3.30pm. Later when he came across the CEO, Agarwal informed him of the bank transfer. The CEO however said that he had sent no such email," said a police officer. An FIR used to be lodged on March 20.
The police double checked and found that the CEO hadn't written the e-mail. Investigators are now trying to figure out if the mail used to be despatched via somebody who had hacked the CEO's e mail or used to be conscious about his password. The possibility of e mail spoofing is also being regarded into.
