PANAJI: Nirmala Institute of Education (NIE) decided to take a detour down memory lane and uphold Goa’s cultural past via choosing a competition themed on abolim vegetation, at a time famend DJs and well-liked Bollywood numbers more often set the tone right through musical events at annual day purposes and faculties fests.

“Plants like vattelax and kodunim have been used by our elders for stomach diseases and pores and skin hypersensitive reactions while asan and saton have been used for accidents. This traditional knowledge was once lost to fashionable medication, however now individuals are coming again to natural roots in a bid to live wholesome. This competition is an avenue for folks to rediscover Goa’s medicinal heritage,” said Shruti Gaad, a pupil at NIE.


At the competition, the weaving of coconut palm leaves which serve as coloration have been also demonstrated. Art also opened up on the premises as famend artist Alexyz painted on ghumots and Clarice Vaz whose innovation of portray with syringes drew many curious eyes to the art stall.


“Abolim will have to be given the standing of a state flower. The competition will keep our heritage alive, however the horticulture division has to seriously take it upon themselves to advertise the flower,” said heritage activist Prajal Sakhardande.
