Fire breaks out at chemical shop in Tirupur market, rattles locals

Tirupur: A major fireplace in a shop promoting chemical substances used for making fireworks sent shockwaves a number of the shopkeepers and residents in the busy Old Bazaar Street and surrounding areas on Wednesday.
The 70-year-old shop, situated on Eswaran Kovil Street in the center of town, had stuck fireplace around 1pm. Seeing the large flames, panicked shopkeepers and commuters ran for his or her lives. Shopkeepers in the space downed shutters straight away, K Sagunthala Devi, who runs an adjoining shop, instructed TOI. “ Some folks jumped into a drainage channel to save lots of ourselves,” he stated.

Three water tenders from the south and north fireplace stations reached where and extinguished the fire within 15 mins.


No one used to be injured in the fireplace, including shop owner G Venkatesan, police sources stated. Nearby electrical posts and transmission wires were broken in the fireplace.


Preliminary investigations printed that the shop used to be promoting barium nitrate and potassium nitrate used for making fireworks. “The shop owner used to be arguing that the chemical substances fall below non-explosive class and he used to be trading the products, so, did not download license from the income, police and fireplace departments. As according to the explosives Act, such shops should not be operated throughout evening hours and should not set up uninterruptible energy provide machine. But, the norms were violated,” a police officer stated.


The streets around Visweswaraswamy and Veeraraghava Perumal Temple host a hectic bazaar. After the incident, several people requested authorities to shift two shops, including a neighbouring shop that also promote the chemical substances, from where. “It is also the first time that one of these main fireplace has took place here, however the shops pose a danger to our lives. So, the district management should take motion to shift the 2 shops that promote the same products on Eswaran Kovil Street,” urged Sakunthala Devi, a neighborhood resident.
