Footbridge collapses over Miami highway, fatalities reported

MIAMI: A newly installed pedestrian bridge spanning a number of lanes of traffic collapsed at Florida International University on Thursday, killing a number of other people and crushing cars caught within the rain of rubble in Miami-Dade County, officials said.

"Several people were killed. I just don't know how many," Alejandro Camacho, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol said in a telephone interview.

There have been no less than 5 to six cars beaten beneath the pedestrian crosswalk, he added.

Munilla Construction Management, which installed the bridge, in a commentary on Twitter, said the bridge suffered a "catastrophic collapse causing injuries and loss of life."

The bridge connects the university with the city of Sweetwater and used to be installed on Saturday in six hours over the eight-lane freeway, according to a story that used to be posted at the university's website online. It used to be 174 ft (53 m) long and weighed 950 heaps.

The bridge used to be intended to provide a walkway over southwest Eighth Street, one of the vital busiest roads in South Florida. An 18-year-old female FIU scholar from San Diego used to be killed whilst trying to go the road close to FIU remaining August, according to native media studies.

Students at FIU are currently on their spring destroy vacation, which runs from March 12 to March 17.

Television footage showed firefighters have been strolling across the flattened wreckage and medics treating injured other people. Emergency workforce gave the look to be trying to work their way through a hole within the top of the bridge.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said President Donald Trump is acutely aware of the cave in.

"Our brave first responders are working feverishly to save lives," she said at a news briefing.

Florida Governor Rick Scott will head to the scene later within the day, his place of business said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that it used to be sending a crew to research the bridge cave in.

Munilla Construction Management used to be founded in 1983 and owned by 5 brothers, according to its website online. In addition to its Florida operations, the corporate also has divisions in Texas and Panama and employs 500 other people.
