TOKYO: A volcano in southern Japan that seemed in a James Bond movie has erupted, capturing smoke and ash 1000's of metres into the sky and grounding dozens of flights to and from a close-by airport.
The Meteorological Agency says the Shinmoedake volcano erupted violently a number of instances on Tuesday, capturing up ash and smoke as much as 2,300 metres in its largest explosion since 2011.
It stated some lava was rising from inside of a crater on the volcano.
The volcano, seen within the 1967 James Bond movie "You Only Live Twice," has had smaller eruptions since final week.
Entry to the 1,421-kilometre-high volcano was restricted.
About 80 flights in and out of the close by Kagoshima airport were cancelled.
Japan has 110 active volcanoes.
