Minority schools defy UT order

CHANDIGARH: With no clarity on what number of seats are to be reserved by way of Chandigarh-based non-public schools below the land allotment scheme, the minority schools have over again not admitted scholars from the economically weaker segment (EWS) and disadvantaged groups. The nonminority schools completed with their admissions below the EWS quota below Right to Education Act on February 28. The education division has already challenged minority status of three non-public minority seats in Punjab and Haryana top court.

There has also been a upward thrust within the number of minority schools in Chandigarh following the Supreme Court ruling in 2012 which stated schools having the minority status aren't bound to reserve 25% seats at entry-level categories below the RTE Act.

Even final 12 months, the UT education division through a letter had made it obligatory for all minority schools in Chandigarh to reserve 15% seats for the students from the economically weaker sections, but not one of the schools complied. When asked, the varsity authorities mentioned they wouldn't admit 15% EWS youngsters until the education division sought legal opinion by way of the legal remembrance (LR) at the order.

The notifications served to the schools states that the schools have to reserve 15% seats for the economically weaker segment and that the schools can charge nominal charges from those youngsters.


The education division officials and faculty authorities had also met property officials in December to hunt clarity but all in useless. When asked a member, from Independent Schools Association, asking for anonymity mentioned, “We by no means won any directives in this regard from education division so no reservations had been made.”


Director, School Education, Rubinderjit Singh Brar did not touch upon when a transparent picture would appear. However he mentioned, “I have sought college wise main points from district education officer.” The minority schools are exempted from RTE Act but like non-minority schools they are also below the mandate to reserve some seats for EWS class below land allotment scheme.


Nitin Goyal, president, Chandigarh Parents association dominated out any roughly confusion over non reservation of seats. “All schools, including the minority schools were given lands at institutional charges which can be some distance beneath the collector charges. These schools wearing the outside of charitable institutions are interested by earnings by way of fleecing folks.
