GURUGRAM: For three days, from March 9 to 11, the second season of the Delhi Theatre Festival promises to regale theatre enthusiasts across the NCR.
Best of all, Gurugrammers don’t need to venture out in their town, with three plays being hosted via Orana Conventions, in Sector 64.
So, right here’s what Gurugram audiences can be expecting. Pankaj Kapur is going solo for his one-act play ‘Dopehri’, which is drama at its maximum unconventional, and also at its maximum emotionally stirring. Naseeruddin, Heeba and Ratna Pathak Shah, too, might be gracing Gurugram, to degree their powerful ‘Ismat Apa Ke Naam’, as will Paresh Rawal, within the thought-provoking ‘Kishan Vs Kanhaiya’.
Dopehri (March 9) is Delhi thespian and author Pankaj Kapur’s magnum opus. Based on a novella via Kapur, ‘Dopehri’ offers with the melancholia of old age in an empathetic and ceaselessly humourous way. It’s the story of Amma bi, a widow who lives alone in a Lucknow haveli. She is fed on via loneliness but still, by some means, unearths the strength to embark on a journey of self-discovery. In its masterful delineation of personality and emotion, ‘Dopehri’ is as humanistic a piece of theatre as you’ll ever see.
Ismat Apa Ke Naam (March 10) is a production from Motley, the Mumbai theatre troupe based via (amongst others) Naseeruddin Shah, within the overdue 1970s. It is the theatre workforce’s debut tryst with an Indian language. The ‘Ismat’ within the name is, in fact, Ismat Khanam Chughtai (1911-1991), the firebrand author whose work took no prisoners, and whose pursuit of the reality rubbed a good few up the wrong means.
Kishan Vs Kanhaiya (March 11), meanwhile, is a play a couple of non-believer’s wrangle with god. Kishanlal Mehta loses his antiques trade following an earthquake, but he can't claim insurance as it used to be a herbal disaster – an act of god. So, he makes a decision to report a case in opposition to god (Krishna, the ‘Kanhaiya’ within the name). It’s a play that’s soaking up and humorous, and also depressing and unhappy.
Tickets start from Rs 1,000, and may also be purchased on www.bookmyshow.com. All the displays start at 7 pm.
