Odisha government announces sops for kendu leaf pluckers

BHUBANESWAR: The state executive on Thursday introduced 100 according to cent bonus on procurement price for kendu leaf pluckers for 2017, a choice that will benefit around eight lakh other people. It would have a burden of around Rs 160 crore on the state exchequer.

The decision used to be taken at the kendu leaf construction council held here at the state secretariat beneath the chairmanship of leader minister Naveen Patnaik.


According to sources, the chief minister also introduced that remuneration of the pluckers will likely be raised from 80 paise to Re 1 in ‘Keri’ (20 leaves) areas and Rs 1.70 to Rs 2 in ‘Fal’ (40 leaves) areas for 2018. Also, the seasonal pluckers and binders gets 20 according to cent incentive for 2017 harvest.


In Odisha, the state executive procures kendu leaves from the pluckers thru its businesses and sells it to buyers. It used to be also made up our minds within the meeting that the profits from the kendu leaf industry will likely be utilized for welfare of the pluckers.


According to sources, the state executive has sanctioned Rs 185 crore into the financial institution accounts of kendu leaf pluckers and binders in 2017. It has also allocated Rs 40 crore for their trends beneath various schemes.
