MANGALURU: The division of food and civil supplies has plans to keep electronic weighing machines in all Indira Canteens to be sure that there is no pilferage.

Weighing machines might be introduced in all four Indira Canteens opened in Mangaluru city, said Khader.

The worth of a plate of idlis, which has 3 idlis, is Rs five at Indira Canteens, and it must weigh 150 grams as consistent with the federal government, within the contract. The division has made it necessary to serve lunch or dinner at Rs 10 consistent with plate, and the weight of a meal must be between 300gm–450gm. Similarly, the contractor must provide 100 grams of chutney with every plate of idli. “However, at this time, there is no mechanism to test the amount of food served in Indira Canteens, hence, the department has determined to keep weighing machines in Indira Canteens,” Khader said.


“We will put into effect this within the Dakshina Kannada district within the first phase, and it will later be carried out in all districts. We have entered into a freelance with bidders to run Indira Canteens in line with prerequisites which come with high quality and quantity of food. Hence, they're bound to make sure high quality and quantity of food served in all retailers,” Khader said.


The minister said, even though Indira Canteens fee simplest Rs five for breakfast, the contractor will get Rs 12. “We are planning to print the real amount paid to the contractor and in addition the velocity at which food is served to people within the coupons distributed on the canteens. Similarly, other measures together with exchange in menu as consistent with regional demand may also be considered by means of the federal government,” Khader said. He said the first hobli-level Indira Canteen within the state might be opened at Thokkottu in Dakshina Kannada district on March 23.
