Theni forest fire: Bring out guidelines for trekking, TN parties demand

CHENNAI: In the wake of deaths of 9 trekkers at Kurangani in Theni district of Tamil Nadu, the DMK and PMK on Monday demanded that the state govt bring out guidelines for trekking. The parties mentioned the government and forest division must make certain no trekking is going down within the forests with out right kind steerage and permission.

In a statement PMK founder S Ramadoss, "The corporate which organised the trekking to Kurangani forests is said to have now not gained any permission from the forest division. Normally, trekkers will likely be allowed into the forest only with the assistance of native people or forest officers. But in this case, the corporate took these kinds of people with out this sort of assist.”


DMK working president M Okay Stalin mentioned the district management and forest division must have provided right kind steerage to the trekkers as forest fires had been common in Kurangani in summer. “Had this been accomplished, the deaths and injuries could have been averted," mentioned Stalin.


He mentioned the state govt must provide specialized remedy to the injured.


Meanwhile, head of forest division and foremost leader conservator of forests H Basavaraju advised TOI that deputy leader minister O Panneerselvam would announce action against the Chennai Trekking Club that organised the ill-fated trekking expedition.
