Ugadi revellers caught gambling thrash 2 cops

BENGALURU: A group of Ugadi revellers attacked two police constables who objected to them gambling within the open in Varthur, Whitefield division, on Sunday afternoon.
Varthur police arrested four and launched a hunt for the other attackers. The arrested men — Murali Mohan, Sandeep, Kumar and Murthy — are residents of Siddapura, near Varthur, and are aged round

30. Murthy and Kumar are Congress employees; Sandeep is vice-president of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Varthur ward.

Basappa Ganigera and Sharana Basappa, connected to Whitefield police station, received calls on their mobiles announcing a big crowd was indulging in gambling on Siddapura govt school premises. Though the spot didn’t fall of their jurisdiction, the duo rushed to the college on their Cheetah motorcycle.


Video helped police officers arrest quartet


“On seeing the police officers, round 10 men rushed towards them, asking what they were doing there. The constables said they had received complaints of gambling on the school premises. But the boys were in no temper to listen and charged at the police officers,” a police officer said.


As the attackers rained blows on them, the duo managed to escape and alert the police regulate room. “Soon, Varthur police rushed to the spot. By then, lots of the gamblers had fled. Luckily, a youth had videographed the incident. With the assistance of photos, we arrested the four men,” police said.


Police officials said they'll query the constables, who're being handled at a health facility, as to why they visited a spot which wasnot of their jurisdiction.
