Walkout by opposition over cattle vaccine

MUMBAI: Accusing the state executive of favouring one company in the contract for farm animals vaccines for foot and mouth disease, the Opposition staged a walkout in the meeting. With tenders called seven times, procurement of the vaccine used to be not on time. The contract used to be finally awarded to a non-public company Biovet.
Opposition leaders rejected animal husbandry minister Mahadev Jankar’s reply of no irregularities.

"The tendering process was transparent. The e-tender was issued several times because of technical problems," Jankar said. “I counsel one day, the state manufactures the vaccine itself. The Centre must provide funds price Rs 150 crore,” he said. He also said the process of vaccination had begun.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar asked why the bid of Indian Immunologicals, a subsidiary of the Centre’s National Dairy Development Board used to be rejected. “The company which finally were given the gentle is providing the similar vaccine at a less expensive charge in other states. They have given it to Maharashtra at Rs 7.70 however in Punjab it is Rs 6.25,” Pawar claimed.

“The executive invited the gentle 7 times till it could cross to the corporate it favoured,” alleged Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan.

Congress leader Vijay Waddettiwar said that farmers had suffered because of the vaccine now not being administered to 2 crore farm animals. “Their milk manufacturing is affected and the animals can't be used for farming as a result of they are prone to disease,” Pawar added. Earlier, the Opposition has alleged that the lack of vaccination towards the disease may have ended in a decline in agricultural and dairy exports price Rs 20,000 crore in the country.
