First train from Chennai on Punalur line has commuters ready to roll

CHENNAI : The first run of a extensive gauge teach from Chennai at the newly laid line between Sengottai and Punalur is a huge hit. Southern Railway sources say that the Tambaram-Kollam special teach (06027) on Friday carried 879 passengers in opposition to a capability of 712, incomes Rs 3.15 lakh.
The special teach is likely to be fastened as a scheduled weekend special teach, say railway sources. The construction follows the final touch via Southern Railway’s development wing of gauge conversion at the 45km Sengottai-Punalur section in the Western Ghats in January.

The line provides a shorter route to Trivandrum by means of Kollam, say railway officers. The different direction is from Coimbatore/Pollachi to Palakkad and from Madurai by means of Kanyakumari. Railway sources say they encountered difficulties as the area is a dense wooded area and used to be infested with snakes and different fauna, making it tough for staff to proceed.

“Currently, just one day-to-day teach is being run from Chennai to Sengottai and there is huge rush at the section. We introduced the special teach only a day sooner than, in spite of which it used to be packed,” mentioned a railway supply.

The teach starts from Tambaram on Friday at five:30 pm and reaches Kollam at 10:30am the following day, and in the reverse direction, starts at 1pm on Saturday and reaches Tambaram at 5am the following day.
