NEW DELHI: The twins from Odisha, Jaga and Balia, who were joined on the head and separated after a surgical procedure, are “clinically” well and do not need ICU or specialised care, AIIMS has advised the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The institute has stated that the twins’ clinical requirements can also be managed at any state-level sanatorium in Odisha with just right nursing and paediatric strengthen.
Jaga and Balia were craniopagus conjoined twins — joined on the head — which medical doctors had stated was once a very rare incidence. They were successfully separated after a 21-hour surgical procedure in October final year.
The NHRC had in March requested for an action-taken document from AIIMS over a petition that sought to prevent the transferring of the twins to a sanatorium in Odisha.
The petition was once filed by means of Supreme Court recommend and human rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy, who claimed that the AIIMS’ department in Bhubaneswar didn't have the crucial infrastructure for the remedy and care of the twins. The boys from Milipada Village in Odisha’s Kandhamal region were likely to be despatched again to the state in the second week of March, the petition stated.
In its reply to the NHRC, AIIMS authorities stated the children were thoroughly evaluated by means of a group of medical doctors, who concluded that risk to existence was once “very low” and so they could be discharged and shifted again to Odisha for supportive and persevered care.
The group incorporated pediatricians, pediatric neurologists, plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons, neuropsychologists and neurosurgeons, they stated.
“A group of senior medical doctors coping with those kids have met a number of instances and feel that they may be able to be managed at any state-level clinical school or district sanatorium with just right nursing and pediatric strengthen,” AIIMS stated in its reply.
