B'luru: Rs 3L jewellery stolen from scientist 

BENGALURU: At a by-invite-only science convention organized in a five-star hotel within the city remaining week, gold jewellery worth round Rs three lakh was stolen from a Mumbai-based geneticist. After going during the CCTV pictures and confirming the crime, victim Dr Manjeet Mehta registered a grievance with High Grounds police.

Manjeet was probably the most 29 speakers at the two-day convention — Biomarkers: From Research To Commercialisation. Manjeet Mehta was scheduled to speak on the second one day, May 25. The theft came about on May 24, when she was being attentive to other lectures.

Manjeet had got rid of her jewellery and positioned it in her purse, which was saved by means of her side. After the day’s scheduled lectures, she returned to the hotel room and found that the jewelry was lacking from the purse. “I immediately alerted the organisers. Examination of the video clippings showed a person stealing it from my purse whilst I was nonetheless there. To my surprise, he was also present within the members’ photograph. He stole the gold in less than 10 mins,” Mehta informed TOI. She mentioned the pictures obviously shows the man arriving and sitting in the back of her.

Manjeet and the organisers was hoping the man would return on the second one day, however he didn’t display up. This caused Manjeet to approach police after she delivered her lecture on May 25.

The scientific geneticist has an experience of 30 years and has been head of department at Dr Lal Path Labs, Metropolis, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and iGenetic diagnostics.

DCP (central) Chandragupta did not reply to calls made by means of TOI.


Maninderjit Singh, exhibition manager of the convention, mentioned hall access was restricted to select members. “After going during the video pictures, we discovered the one that stole the jewelry gained access without authorisation, walking in with a gaggle of scientists. He was dressed in a badge but it wasn’t the one given by means of us,” he mentioned. Singh blamed the hotel security for the lapse, claiming they must no longer have allowed anyone without registration to get in.


‘Not our fault’


Vishwas Jagatap, security manager at Le Meridien hotel which hosted the convention, alternatively, mentioned there was no security lapse on their section. “The guy who was observed stealing were present since 8.30am and was observed with other members. We can’t prevent guests after they input the hall. His badge was very similar to those worn by means of other members,” Jagatap mentioned.
