CHENNAI: The police are probing a WhatsApp audio during which an unidentified man is heard difficult Rs 1 lakh as protection cash from a dentist who lodged a criticism with the Kanathur police.
In the criticism, Dr Harish, who runs a clinic in Sholinganallur along with his spouse, also a health care provider, said the man threatened to kill him or a member of his family if the volume was no longer paid.
The dentist instructed police that he received a call on his mobile phone on Tuesday. After making sure that he was chatting with Dr Harish, the caller demanded Rs 1 lakh. When the dentist said he didn’t have the volume, the man diminished it to Rs 50,000.
In the audio clip, recorded via the doctor, which was accessed via TOI, the caller is heard announcing that it’s the norm now to gather protection cash. “Once you pay Rs 50,000, you're going to never be disturbed and if you have any downside, you'll be able to touch me on my non-public quantity,” he said, adding that he has extorted cash from many medical doctors.
The caller said the daily activities of the dentist and family have been being monitored and warned Harish not to chance their lives via refusing to pay the volume or informing the police. He also claimed that the police would no longer take any motion in opposition to him even supposing they have been approached since he was conversant in top police group of workers in the city. However, the doctor preferred to resort a police criticism.
