Delhi: Brace for fresh water crisis

NEW DELHI: After a short lived Supreme Court-mediated period of respite, the capital is likely to face water scarcity again from Tuesday as the extent within the Wazirabad pond have dropped several feet underneath the standard level.

The affected spaces will come with Moolchand, South Extension, Greater Kailash, Lodhi Road and Nizamuddin within the south; Janakpuri, Punjabi Bagh and Moti Nagar within the west; Mukherjee Nagar, Model Town, Civil Lines, GTB Nagar and Ashok Vihar within the north and Daryaganj, Walled City, Chadni Chowk and Jama Masjid in central Delhi. Delhi Cantt and spaces round ITO, India Gate and Connaught Place must also brace for scarcity, a DJB respectable stated.


Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has reported that the present level at the Wazirabad pond stands at 671.9ft against the standard 674.5ft. “Due to the aid of waft of raw water, the manufacturing of water treatment vegetation at Haiderpur, Dwarka, Nangloi, Bawana, Wazirabad, Okhla and Chadrawal have been affected,” a senior respectable stated.


DJB will now rationalise the availability by diverting water from less impacted water treatment vegetation (WTPs) to more significantly impacted Wazirbad and Chandrawal WTPs and water will be available at low power for coming days.


After a protracted disaster within the first 3 months this 12 months, DJB had approached each NGT and the Supreme Court to drive Haryana to unlock water. Haryana had assured Delhi that the availability can be maintained till May 15.
