LUDHIANA: Eight days after two undertrials escaped, prison minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa suspended 4 Ludhiana Central Jail officers on Tuesday. According to the inquiry report submitted through IG (prisons) RK Arora, three out of those 4 had signed the rollcall of Sunday evening in which the undertrials have been marked provide, at the same time as they had already escaped.
The suspended officers include prison superintendent Shamsher Singh Boparai, deputy superintendent Manjit Singh Tiwana, assistant superintendent Parwinder Singh and head warder Nishan Singh. However, the suspension of superintendent is being reconsidered as he was on depart that day.
On May 13, siblings, Harvinder Singh and Jasvir Singh, accused of a burglary at Andhra Bank, Rasulra branch, Khanna, had escaped from the prison.
The police investigation found that the accused scaled the prison wall through the use of thick cables of CCTV cameras and wall clips fixed at the administrative block.
Jail minister Randhawa had marked an inquiry to the IG (prisons) RK Arora and he submitted his report on Monday. Randhawa stated, “It was the negligence and laxity of prison officers that helped the undertrials escape. As according to the probe report, the rollcall -- on which the deputy superintendent, the assistant superintendent and the pinnacle warder have signed – signifies that the accused siblings have been provide in the barrack. But, the CCTV pictures shows the duo was in different places at the time of rollcall. And a few mins later they escaped.”
ADGP (prisons) IPS Sahota stated, “The investigation report states that undertrials have been hiding at the premises during rollcall. If the officers had carried out their responsibility successfully, they could have foiled the plan of the accused. The inquiry report also helps the investigation of the local police.” According to the report, the accused fled from the executive block. The officer stated even the guards have been negligent as they didn’t prevent Harvinder and Jasvir when they have been roaming around.
‘Supdt suspension may be revoked’
ADGP IPS Sahota stated the suspension of prison superintendent Shamsher Singh Boparai was being reconsidered as he was on depart that day. Sahota stated he has taken up the subject with the prison minister with the recommendation of reinstating him.
