‘Hope Vaniya’s killers won’t get bail easily’

AHMEDABAD: The 4 Dalit men who have been flogged in public in Una in July 2016 have spoken strongly in strengthen of the circle of relatives of Mukesh Vaniya, a ragpicker who was thrashed to death on Sunday in Rajkot.

The 4 men — Ramesh, Vashram, Ashok, and Bechar Sarvaiya — have been battered for skinning a dead cow. They say that the accused within the Vaniya case should not get bail simply as they may pose a danger to the victim’s kinfolk.


The Sarvaiyas, who plan to visit Vaniya’s circle of relatives in Limbdi, about 250km from Una, said that two of them have been attacked again by way of an accused within the flogging case. On April 25, days prior to 14 individuals of the Sarvaiya circle of relatives embraced Buddhism, Kiran Babusinh Darbar (accused No. 23 within the Una case) waylaid Ashok and Ramesh Sarvaiya and attacked them with a spade. An FIR was lodged on the Una the town police station. “The accused abused the complainant and attacked him as a result of the animosity harboured over naming them within the flogging incident,” reads the FIR.


“My brothers have been saved within the nick of time by way of police,” said Vashram Sarvaiya, some of the Una sufferers who will visit Vaniya’s place of dwelling on Thursday. Darbar was arrested however launched on bail.


“The executive had promised speedy trial in our case however that hasn’t came about,” Vashram Sarvaiya said. “We demand a speedy trial in Vaniya’s case. All the 34 accused in our case have been granted bail and the danger we are facing has intensified. Even within the Thangadh case, through which three Dalit youths have been killed in police firing, all of the accused are out on bail.”
