Joint parliamentary panel suspends public hearings on citizenship bill

GUWAHATI: The joint parliamentary committee on Citizenship (modification) Bill of 2016 is not going to carry any further public hearings, no less than not ahead of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens being up to date in Assam is revealed. The Supreme Court, which is tracking the updating exercise, has fixed June 30 for the publication of the final draft.

A member of the committee advised TOI, “The JPC was meant to meet on Thursday in New Delhi for finalisation of the dates for holding public hearings in West Bengal, Tripura and a 2d discuss with to Assam (upper Assam) areas the place as lot of organizations are difficult public hearings. Today we gained a message that the meeting has been cancelled without any reason why.”

The JPC members all through their ultimate visits to Assam and Meghalaya have seen for themselves that the topic is a grave one and must be addressed as soon as possible, the member added. “We had been decided on completing the entire public hearings in Tripura and West Bengal and parts of Assam as briefly as possible in order that we will be able to place our document ahead of Parliament within the coming monsoon session,” the member mentioned.

He mentioned that the entire members of the JPC are puzzled over this sudden cancellation of the meeting to mend dates for the following journeys for public hearings. “There is definitely somebody who does not want the public hearings to take place any further, especially in Assam the place the opposition to the bill is vigorous and in style in comparison to the beef up the bill has gained in Barak valley,” the member mentioned.

The JPC is also puzzled via Assam government’s insistence to look forward to the NRC publication for taking a choice. "In fact, all parties, together with BJP’s spouse within the government AGP and BPF have made their stands transparent. Only BJP up to now has avoided spelling out its stand. The JPC does not understand on what grounds the BJP has related the bill to the NRC. The bill concerns the whole of India whilst the NRC is just about Assam,” the member mentioned.
