Coimbatore: The long stay up for Vadavalli Bus Stand ended after rural and municipal management minister SP Velumani inaugurated it on Saturday.
The bus stand, which used to be announced nearly six years ago, used to be meant to be built as a full-fledged bus stand with parking bays, neighborhood corridor, rooms and trendy facilities. It got behind schedule because of loss of funds and various other administrative reasons. Land problems forced the company to change the plan, reduce the finances and convert it into an odd facility.
As a result, while the initial finances used to be Rs 5cr, the price of the undertaking used to be only Rs 2.5cr, reliable resources said. Currently, the facility can accommodate only 4 to 5 buses at a time.
Vadavalli residents said that the world had grown all of a sudden. “There used to be heavy site visitors congestion here and the outdated bus stand used to be the main reason. Buses prevent here for a couple of hours some instances and fully block site visitors,” said Bhadrinath, a resident.
Every day, more than three,000 passengers shuttle from the place, a commuter said. “Be it solar or rain, commuters suffered because of the loss of a bus terminus. From 7am to 11am and again from 4pm to 9pm, this house is all the time congested,” said a store proprietor close to the bus stand.
Though the bus stand has been inaugurated, it is nonetheless unclear how the facility will help solve site visitors woes as it isn't a terminus as deliberate earlier, said Radha, a resident. “We hope that the civic body expands it soon and guarantees that the buses may also be parked inside of,” she said.
Corporation officers, however, said that it used to be never intended to be a terminus. “Buses can't be parked here. They can simply enter and exit the facility. It used to be intended to reduce site visitors congestion. It will indubitably be useful for commuters as there is a shelter and also seats,” said an engineer.
