MUMBAI: In a first for town, the BMC on Monday began putting in floating trash brooms which are expected to arrest floating garbage like thermocol and plastic, combating them from coming into the ocean.
On Monday, the primary trash broom used to be put in on the Irla pumping station. Civic officials mentioned that during all seven trash brooms will likely be put in by way of June 2, prior to the onset of the monsoon. The locations will likely be: Dahisar, Poisar, Oshiwara, Mithi River, Mogra Nullah, and Lovegrove pumping station. The set of mega brooms were bought in Kolkata for Rs.1.1 crore.
V Khankar, the BMC's chief engineer of storm water drains (SWD) mentioned the trash brooms will likely be positioned at important locations just about river or nullah outfalls into the ocean or creek.
