Nirbhaya rape and murder case: Supreme Court reserves order on review plea by 2 death row convicts

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday reserved its verdict at the plea of 2 condemned convicts--Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta--seeking a evaluation of the 2017 verdict through which they, at the side of two others, have been awarded demise penalty within the sensational December 16, 2012 (Nirbhaya) gangrape cum murder case here.

The apex court had on May five, 2017, upheld the verdict of the Delhi High Court and the trial court awarding the capital punishment to four convicts--Mukesh (29), Pawan (22), Vinay Sharma (23) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) for gangraping a 23-year-old pupil inside a shifting bus in South Delhi.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan heard the arguments on behalf of condemned convicts Vinay and Pawan.


It requested senior recommend Siddharth Luthra, representing Delhi Police, and lawyer A P Singh, counsel for the 2 convicts, to record their written submissions via subsequent Tuesday.


The bench had earlier reserved its verdict at the evaluation petition filed via convict Mukesh. The evaluation petition on behalf of Akshay is yet to be filed.


The paramedic pupil used to be gangraped at the intervening evening of December 16-17, 2012 inside a shifting bus in South Delhi via a gang of six persons and critically assaulted prior to being thrown out at the road bare. She succumbed to her injuries on December 29, 2012 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.


Another accused within the case, Ram Singh, had allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail, whilst a convicted juvenile has come out of the reformation house after serving a three-year term.
