HYDERABAD: Following the University Grants Commission's (UGC's) determination to allow higher educational institutions to provide online non-technical level classes, the Osmania University (OU) is all set to introduce one matter in line with direction online from the 2018-19 educational yr.
The laws for online classes had been authorized via the UGC in its meeting held on Thursday and are aimed at reaching the targeted gross enrollment ratio of 30% via 2020.
"The reform will be implemented on an experimental basis wherein students seeking admission to undergraduate commerce, arts and science streams will have one subject in the massive open online course (MOOC) introduced by the ministry of human resource development," stated S Ramachandram, vice-chancellor, OU.
The subjects beneath MOOCs may have at least four quadrants: video lectures, e-content, self-assessment and a dialogue discussion board to elucidate doubts. "If implementation of one subject per course is smooth during the academic year 2018-19, we intend to extend the number of subjects offered online. The UGC permits 20% of courses online," added Ramachandram.
As in line with laws, the tests can be performed in proctored mode and in conformity with any norms stipulated via the commission. The OU is among the 3 universities in Telangana, except the University of Hyderabad and Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, which might be eligible for providing online classes as in line with UGC norms.
The OU has also initiated steps to redesign undergraduate curriculum. The changes can be in line with the fashion curriculum issued via the UGC. "We have already held a series of meetings with the Telangana State Council of Higher Education to redesign the courses. The changes will also be implemented in affiliated degree courses," stated a senior reputable.
Officials claim the revised curriculum can be more concerned with equipping students with enhanced spoken English and communication talents in conjunction with industry publicity. The university may be planning to make it obligatory for teachers to put up periodic stories on educational actions, including what they teach in classrooms and analysis procedures followed. Academic audits can be made a standard follow to beef up the quality of training.
