Repoll in 568 booths begins amid tight security

KOLKATA: Repolling in 568 cubicles throughout West Bengal from the place the State Election Commission (SEC)won lawsuits of violence right through the panchayat ballot, started today amid tight security.
The cubicles the place repolling is being held are unfold in all of the 20 districts of the state the place the rural polls have been hung on Monday, SEC officers said.

The state govt and the police were asked to make elaborate security preparations so that the repolling is held in a unfastened and truthful way, they said.

"The repolling started at 7 in the morning and will end at 5 pm. The counting will take place tomorrow (on May 17)," the SEC officers said.

The repolling has been ordered in 10 cubicles in Hooghly, 28 cubicles in West Midnapore, 52 cubicles in Coochbehar, 63 cubicles in Murshidabad, 60 cubicles in Nadia, 59 cubicles in North 24 Parganas, 55 cubicles in Malda, 73 cubicles in Uttar Dinajpur and 26 in South 24 Pargans amongst others, they said.

Aggrieved by the violence that marked the panchayat ballot in West Bengal which claimed no less than 12 lives and left 43 injured, several candidates who have been within the fray had met the SEC officers and demanded the repolling.

Independent candidates too met the SEC officers to request repoll in their seats.

Opposition events had accused the TMC of "unleashing a reign of terror and destroying democracy". The TMC, on the other hand, termed the allegations as "baseless".

Several non-political organisations held sit-ins outside the SEC place of business the day prior to this in protest in opposition to the violence on the polling day. The rural polls have been held after a chronic criminal fight within the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court involving the State Election Commission, the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition events.
