Russian foreign minister to visit North Korea on Thursday

MOSCOW: Russian overseas minister Sergei Lavrov will go back and forth to North Korea on Thursday to discuss the reclusive state's nuclear programme and bilateral cooperation, the overseas ministry stated.
"Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov's official visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will take place on May 31," the overseas ministry stated in a statement on Wednesday.

Lavrov and his North Korean counterpart will discuss bilateral ties, North Korea's nuclear programme and different key global issues, the overseas ministry stated.

Last month North Korea's overseas minister Ri Yong Ho held rare talks with Lavrov in Moscow as Pyongyang strikes to improve strained ties with world powers.

Lavrov will go back and forth to North Korea amid preparations for a high-stakes, high-drama summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Washington desires North Korea to quickly surrender all its nuclear weapons in a verifiable manner in return for sanctions and economic relief.

Pyongyang has a special view of denuclearization and stays deeply nervous that leaving behind its deterrent would depart it inclined, especially whilst the United States maintains a robust army presence in South Korea.
