HUBBALLI: While Indian Railways concluded this financial year with 73 accidents, the lowest in the past 35 years, South Western Railway (SWR) has reduced the number from 11 to just one in the past 4 years.
There were 11 accidents in 2014-15, eight in 2015-16, three in 2016-17 and one in 2017-18 in SWR. AK Gupta, general manager, SWR, stated safety is the SWR’s essential priority and because of consistent efforts, it bagged the safety shield for 2017-18 at the national degree. “Railways minister Piyush Goyal and Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani stressed on safety upgrades, even at the price of temporarily affecting operations in many spaces like velocity restrictions,” he added.
Asked about preventive measures beneath SWR limits, Gupta stated the safety department carried out man-to-man contact with all workforce concerned about train operations at once or not directly, counselling of all individuals relying on requirement all the way through inspections, safety meetings, seminars and campaigns.
“Monitoring of periodic clinical exam and refresher lessons for workforce at once connected with train operations were different measures to fortify capabilities,” he added.
He stated, “We ensured availability and efficacy of crucial equipment at stations, locomotives and crucial spare items at depots. Monitoring of the Safety Action Plan of each department, vital research and follow-up were carried out incessantly. Internal Safety Audits of divisions and Inter-Railway Safety Audits were arranged incessantly.”
E Vijaya, deputy general manager, SWR, stated the division focused on the public by engaging in campaigns to coach highway users and so they covered 297 villages, 548 joint assessments at unmanned degree crossings in association with RTOs.
“We dispensed handbills and pamphlets to round 80,000 other folks, sent about 40 lakh smses and organised 10 TV and radio programmes. We extensively utilized side road performs to sensitize voters,” she added.
