Tamil Nadu government suspends internet in Tuticorin for 5 days to stop spread of 'rumours'

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu govt on Wednesday ordered suspension of web services in Tuticorin and adjacent districts of Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari for five days to stop spread of rumours through social media and help convey public tranquility.
Blaming provocative messages spread through social media, the government in an order stated such messages led to a massive gathering of about 20,000 folks on Tuesday in Tuticorin towards Sterlite's copper plant which subsequently led to violence and police motion.

Noting that anti-social elements had been seeking to exploit the situation, the government directed nodal officials of Internet Service Providers in those three districts to suspend web services till May 27 efficient from lately.

Passing the order beneath Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017 -Stoppage of web services- the government stated a public emergency has arisen necessitating instant motion to convey public tranquility.

Citing a conversation on this respect from the Director General of Police, the order stated "it is felt necessary that the services of internet should be stopped/curtailed to prevent spread of such rumours."

Also, the government stated the brief restriction was once in the interest of keeping up public order and preventing incitement to commission of any offence.

Eleven individuals have died in police firing during the anti-copper plant violence at Tuticorin so far, while many have been injured in clashes with security personnel.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu chief minister Ok Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam known as on Governor Banwarilal Purohit and apprised him of the violent incidents towards the Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin.
