US complains to China after laser incidents in Djibouti

WASHINGTON: The United States officially complained to China after Chinese nationals pointed lasers at its army airplane close to Djibouti in a number of incidents in recent weeks, the Pentagon mentioned on Thursday.

The US army has been grappling with lasers being pointed at airplane for decades. However, the incidents highlight the worry the United States has about a Chinese army base just miles from a critical US base in Djibouti.

"They are very serious incidents ... We have formally démarched the Chinese government and we've requested the Chinese investigate these incidents," Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White informed reporters.

White mentioned the Pentagon was once confident that the lasers had been pointed by means of Chinese nationals and in the past few weeks fewer than 10 incidents had taken position. The intent was once unclear.

A US legit, speaking at the situation of anonymity, mentioned that during one incident last month two pilots in a C-130 suffered minor eye injuries.

The legit mentioned that during a couple of instances, army grade lasers from the Chinese base had been pointed at airplane.


Djibouti is strategically located on the southern front to the Red Sea at the path to the Suez Canal.


Djibouti hosts a US army base this is home to about 4,000 personnel, including special operations forces, and is a launch pad for operations in Yemen and Somalia.


This year, the US army put countering China, along with Russia, on the heart of a brand new nationwide protection strategy.
