NEW DELHI: London-listed Vedanta Resources hopes to restart its Sterlite copper smelter in Tamil Nadu and still wants to double its capacity regardless of protests demanding its closure that killed 13 folks this week, a company executive instructed Reuters on Friday.
The corporate's position comes a day after the state mentioned it used to be looking for an everlasting closure of the plant because of allegations that it pollutes the air and water of the locality.
"We're not in that stage to look at setting up a plant elsewhere," P. Ramnath, chief executive of Vedanta's India copper trade, mentioned in an interview.
"We're confident that we will be able to overcome these issues. It will certainly require a huge effort but I am sure we can hope to restart as quickly as possible."
The plant, within the coastal town of Thoothukudi, has been close since late March for repairs and pending a renewal of its licence, whilst locals continued in large part non violent protests demanding its everlasting shutdown.
