CHENNAI: A woman who was arrested in July 2017 for botched up abortion that resulted in the demise of a girl with disability, was arrested again on Saturday after well being department officers found her secretly the usage of a portable ultrasound system at her place of abode in Tirukoilur close to Villupuram.
The accused has been recognized as Vijayalakshmi Tamilselvan. Health department officers won a tip about Tamilselvan providing intercourse choice services and products for 5,000. Gender choice and intercourse selective abortion is a criminal offense below the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994.
In July 2017, Vijayalakshmi followed crude procedures to abort fetus of a disabled girl who was pregnant for the fourth time then. The girl started bleeding profusely and was referred to the Villupuram executive hospital, the place she died three days later.
"We seized the machine and handed her over to the police. The case is still pending in the court," said superintendent M Kamalakannan.
However, Vijayalakshmi, who was out on bail bought portable ultrasound system and arrange an airconditioned clinic in the back of her area. "We sent a four month pregnant as decoy. We recovered the cash of 77,990 from her cash box. The cash included 5,000 we sent to our decoy," said deputy superintendent of police A Thomas Prabhakaran.
She instructed the police she did not carry out any unlawful abortions after the demise of a girl in 2017. Villupuram subcollector, Charushri, joint director of well being services and products, S Nehru have been present all over the decoy operation. "She tried to escape but we caught her on time. She has confessed the charges,," Prabhakaran said.
