GUWAHATI: Congress legislator of Karimganj North constituency in Assam’s Karimganj district, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha went past the decision of accountability of people’s representative when he carried the our bodies of two underprivileged SC men on his shoulder, built the pyre and performed the closing rites in conjunction with the two men’s minor sons.
The two men, Nishi Namasudra (40) and Kulendra Namasudra (49), either one of Sarifnagar, Kanishaile locality of Karimganj and neighbours, died on Sunday morning. They have been unwell for a while, believed to be due residing in unhygienic condition led to via the unheard of floods in the house.
The village cremation floor is inundated and the closing rites have been performed via the National Highway 8 at Patelnagar nearby, which used to be the only available dry house. More than 4000 people of Karimganj house have taken shelter in reduction camps.
“I received a choice from one of the most villagers that these two persons have died and so they have been helpless. I rushed to where thru flood water. It’s my accountability to be with people more when they are in misery,” Purkayastha informed TOI. Both men have left at the back of their better halves and two sons, aged 5 and six years.
Dey mentioned that the flood scenario in Karimganj district has worsened on a daily basis. “This is unheard of and large swaths of land are beneath water proper until the Bangladesh border.” Altogether 292 villages in the district are reported to be flood-hit until Sunday.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Karimganj district is the worst-hit with nearly 2.15 lakh people affected. Over 6,150 persons have been evacuated to safer puts during the closing 24 hours via the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) workforce from Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar.
