Crime Branch to superintendents of police: Take measures to prevent cruelty on children

BHUBANESWAR: The state Crime Branch has requested the district superintendents of police (SPs) to take good enough measures for prevention of cruelty on youngsters after the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) drew the state executive's consideration to a video, in which a one-year-old child is proven placed on burning charcoal right through a non secular tournament in an unknown position in Odisha.

The Crime Branch has issued a round asking the SPs to make sure proper implementation of the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (care and protection of kids) Act 2015. "We have asked the SPs to sensitise their investigating officers in police stations to the Act. Cruelty to children not only involves physical assault on them, but also abandoning them. Stringent action will work as a deterrent to prevent such offences," a senior Crime Branch legit told TOI.


As in step with section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (care and protection of kids) Act, whoever attacks a kid or wilfully neglects his or her care can be punished with imprisonment of 3 years and high quality of rupees one lakh. Sources mentioned the police stations have been requested to behavior raids at other resorts, restaurants and commercial retail outlets to check whether youngsters are hired at the ones places in gross violation of regulation. There have been instances of police in conjunction with social workers rescuing several youngsters, who were assaulted through their employers at other places within the state.


The follow of branding children with sizzling iron rods to remedy them of diseases continues to be the commonest type of cruelty on youngsters in several interior parts of Odisha. "We are shocked to see such brutal practises in many districts where people still have no access to hospitals. During different religious events, mostly on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, parents subject their ailing children to torture. To cure stomach ailments, parents allow priests to brand their childrn with hot iron rods. There has to be an end to this," mentioned Siddharth Das, a lawyer.


Child rights activists mentioned the state executive must behavior awareness campaigns to prevent parents from subjecting their youngsters to cruelty.
