Debt-ridden sugar farmer writes to PM, seeks mercy killing

BELAGAVI: Bogged down by way of monetary disaster resulting from the non-payment of dues by way of sugar factories, a farmer in Linganmath village in Khanapur taluk has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, in the hunt for mercy killing for his family.
In the letter, Balappa Shankar Matolli stated that non-payment of dues by way of Shivsagar Sugar Factory in Udapudi in Ramdurg taluk and Soubhagyalaxmi Sugar Factory in Hirenandi, Gokak taluk, has deteriorated his family’s monetary situation and made them mentally depressed.

Matolli, who lives along with his aged oldsters, wife and youngsters, has four acres of land in Linganmath. He took Rs 3.5 lakh farm mortgage from KVG Bank, Rs 1 lakh gold mortgage from Canara Bank, Rs 2 lakh personal mortgage from Urban Bank and Rs 1 lakh mortgage from non-public moneylenders.

According to the farmer, he has no longer gained the fee of sugarcane provided to Shivsagar Factory in 2015-16. Matolli added that gave a truck on hire to Soubhagyalaxmi Sugar Factory, owned by way of minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, in 2013-14 but didn't obtain fee for the carrier. Two wells in his farm dried, making his situation insufferable.


Matolli stated that his father suffered a center assault and he had to spend over Rs four lakh for treatment previously two years.


The farmer had to promote his truck. The turn of occasions rendered him unemployed and he struggled to organize cash for his father’s treatment and daily bills.


He wrote the letter, in the hunt for mercy killing, on June nine and posted copies to native MLA Anjali Nimbalkar, the deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and the tahsildar.
