Five held for smuggling cows through Baisipali sanctuary

BHUBANESWAR: Cow smuggling in the course of the forests of Baisipali natural world sanctuary in Mahanadi natural world department continues unabated, with natural world body of workers arresting 5 extra individuals on Saturday evening.

Five days in the past, three smugglers were arrested in the Bankajhari house of the sanctuary with 14 cows. The suspected smugglers were reportedly guided in the course of the wooded area by way of poachers. "They were caught in the core area. Nobody is allowed inside the core area except authorized forest personnel," mentioned divisional wooded area officer Anshu Pragyan Das.


The 5 arrested on Saturday were recognized as Nabakishor Behera, Bidyadhar Mohanty, Nanda Lenka, Satosh Mati and Arup Barad. They were booked below the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Three smugglers - Trinath Nayak, Krushna Behera and Kanhei Pradhan - were arrested in the previous case.


Forest body of workers mentioned the traffickers used the wooded area route to achieve the point the place a truck is parked. The cows are loaded and transported to Kolkata.


An officer mentioned the presence of livestock in the core house of a sanctuary may result in the spread of diseases from them to the wild animals. In some sanctuaries, there are demarcated spaces for the grazing of livestock to reduce biotic power. "We take care to reduce the biotic pressure by keeping the cows and other livestock away from core area. The forest personnel also launch vaccination drive to check diseases from being transmitted," a senior officer mentioned.
