Four road projects to cut travel time, improve goods transport

CHENNAI: To give a big fillip to freight movement and cut back travelling time between main towns in Tamil Nadu, the Centre is making plans four main avenue initiatives in delta and southern districts. These are a number of the slew of highway growth initiatives being planned in the state beneath the Bharatmala Pariyojana and the National Highway Development Programme of the Central government. They usually are rolled out in the next few months.



While feeder corridors will attach Melur and Karaikudi by way of Pillayarpatti, an economic corridor is being proposed from Rajapalayam to Srivilliputhur as a part of the Thirumangalam-Shenkottah (151km) highway growth. The other avenue initiatives at the anvil are growth of residual stretches (44km) linking Madurai and Bodi and an 85km-road connecting Tirupathur in Sivaganga district with Thanjavur. The initiatives can be completed by the National Highways Authority of India. The NHAI has put many highway growth initiatives in TN on fast monitor after the Edappadi Ok Palaniswami government took over.

The state had previous stalled land acquisition for plenty of NHAI initiatives during Jayalalithaa’s tenure. The initiatives will cover Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Theni, Sivaganga and Thanjavur.

Of the four initiatives, detailed challenge document is able for the 45.85km avenue that might attach Melur, Pillayarpatti and Karaikudi at a cost of ₹756 crore. “We have already floated delicate for the challenge,” said an NHAI respectable.
