Coimbatore: Four village panchayats in Coimbatore district have taken the lead in rural cast waste management in a systematic method, aiming for zero garbage dumping of their limits.
The 4 panchayats in Karamadai block have entered into an settlement with a non-public company for scientific disposal of waste. A Ravichandran, block building officer of Karamadai block, signed an MoU with ITC Limited on Tuesday to take care of zero garbage at the 4 panchayats.
Head of ITC Packaging and Specialty Paper unit, Coimbatore, Pranav Sharma signed the settlement on behalf of the corporate.
The programme can be implemented in Thekkampatti, Kemmarampalayam, Kalampalayam and Maradhur panchayats with the help of Imayam Social Welfare Organization providing expertise in cast waste management.
As in step with the MoU, ITC will create awareness amongst citizens to segregate the garbage at household level. ITC will even behavior various awareness programmes and guide the panchayat personnel to do scientific waste management.
Ravichandran said that the cast waste management programme can be rolled out in a phased method. The programme has been taken up beneath public private group partnership on Rural Solid waste management (RSWM) beneath the aegis of “Mission Sunehrakal.” The programme can be in position for 3 years.
Panchayat officers said that few villages including Odanthurai which may be located in Karamadai had been enforcing cast waste management programmes for years. But a number of villages are but to get up to the concept that and the programme in these 4 village panchayats could be a serious warning call for others.
Representatives from Imayam said that awareness programmes on cast waste management have already started in the villages.
