Hyderabad chokes on ground-level ozone from cars

HYDERABAD: Ground point ozone air pollution within the city is emerging alarmingly, displays knowledge collated via the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB). Sounding a word of warning, environmentalists say that this would become a major cause for concern for town.

Figures from January to April display that spaces in and round Hyderabad Central University (HCU) saw a steep rise in ground-level ozone air pollution, particularly right through January to March. This was adopted via Bollaram, which recorded a rise in January.

“The ozone layer is shaped because of air pollution from automobiles, particularly right through height hours. Usually, probably the most polluted time is from 9am to 6pm, as there is a steep rise in traffic right through this time,” mentioned T Veerana, joint chief environmental scientist, TSPCB.

Expertscitethehightemperatures coupled with winds wearing a prime point of pollution asthe reason why for theincrease in ground point ozone. “Increase in ground point ozone can also be damaging as it indicates the inclusion of primary pollution like nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons,” mentioned M Sudheer, an environmental skilled.

Exposure to low quantities of ozone may cause cough, dry mouth and headaches, while longterm exposure, when ozone concentration within the air rises above 180 micrograms in step with cubic metre, can exacerbate health issues such as bronchial asthma and heart illness.

“Inhaling air withhighconcentration of ozone may cause musclesin the airwaystoconstrict making it difficult to breathe. It can also cause inflammation and injury the airlines,” mentioned VV Ramana Prasad, consultant interventional pulmonologist at KIMS Hospitals.

The PCB knowledge on ground levelozone air pollution is essentially drawn from six air quality stations— Sanathnagar,ZooPark, IDA Pashamylaram, Bollaram Industrial Area, Icrisat Patancheru and Central University.
