In 4 days, 26 kids enrol in Rajni’s alma mater

BENGALURU: While many government schools are grappling with declining choice of admissions, the Model Government School in Gavipuram, south Bengaluru has observed 26 in 4 days. The school carries the tag of being the alma mater of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. It used to be renovated not too long ago and boasts a Rs 15-crore swanky structure.

The school had 91 students in 2017-18 and 15 of them passed in Class 7 and got transfer certificate. The school body of workers started awareness rallies from May 28 and took up door-to-door surveys to find out dropouts within the locality with an aim to enrol 200 kids this year. Admissions will proceed until June 30.

“The establishment is popularly known as Rajinikanth school. We had 26 admissions within the last 4 days, for Classes 1 to eight. From this year, there are plans to begin LKG categories too and 10 children have already started coming to the school. Ten more might be admitted as soon as categories get started. The new development, computer science lab and audio-visual room had been the major points of interest,” said Kokilavani M, in-charge headmistress of the school.

Vijaya M, a construction labourer from Sanyasikunte, close to Gavipuram, who enrolled her 12-year-old daughter Monisha, said, “It’s Rajini’s school. My son also studied here sometime ago. I've now admitted my daughter to Class 6. The school has changed a lot now,” she said.

Association for Voluntary Action and Service (AVAS), an NGO, brought 10 underprivileged students to the school for admission. “There are trained within the informal training approach. With the help of teachers, we enrolled them,” said Arjun S, an alumnus and cultural facilitator of the school.
