Karnataka: Bridge built across Phalguni river collapses

MANGALURU: A bridge built across the Phalguni river at Mullarapatna connecting Mangaluru and Bantwal collapsed on Monday allegedly because of rampant sand mining.
Officials from the district administration rushed to the spot and took note of items. In view of security purposes, police were deployed on either side of the bridge. Visit to the world or walk at the remaining part of the bridge has been restricted.

“Under no circumstance is a person allowed to mine sand at a minimum radius of 500 metres from a bridge. However, in Mullarapatna, sand mining is being carried out since a number of years,” an area alleged.

The media had in August final year reported that pillars of the bridge at Mullarapatna have been visual from their base as a result of unchecked sand mining. Though mechanised extraction of sand is banned in the district, miners were deploying excavators and different machineries to take away sand in both Nethravati and Phalguni rivers, regarded as the lifelines of the folks here.

The bridge was instrumental in connecting Bantwal to various places.

“It might not be flawed if one calls Mullarapatna a hub of sand mafia. Illegal sand mining in is being undertaken right below the nostril of presidency officials,” another native stated.


Farangipete, 10th mile, Thumbay, Lower Thumbay, Brahmarakootlu, Talapady, Shanti Angadi, Saralpady, Ajilamagaru, Shambhooru and Mullarapatna are a few of the different key spaces in Bantwal where sand mining is rampant.


It could also be recalled that a early life had died on this house all over a police raid. In a bid to flee the police, the early life jumped into the river considering he may swim towards safety. However, he fell into a pit that was created in the river because of extra sand mining and died.


The bridge was instrumental in connecting Bantwal to various places, including Mangaluru, Kuppepedav, Kaikamba, Kateel, Iruvailu, Ganjimutt, Yedapadav and Surathkal by way of Sornadu.


No casualties were reported in the incident.
