Kolkata: Jail doctor sneaks in contraband, held

KOLKATA: A contractual doctor hired with the Alipore central jail hospital for the past four and a half years was arrested for allegedly seeking to smuggle cell phones, narcotics, alcohol and even cash into Alipore Central Jail on Friday night. He was stuck red-handed in the presence of an eightmember special team led via a DIG level officer. The accused, Amitabha Chowdhury, is just a member of a large racket, sources in Lalbazar stated.

Police stated the accused — a medical professional attached with correctional homes for the past one decade and dwelling at the Khanpur Road house in Naktala — was arrested around 10.40pm with two bags and produced in courtroom on Saturday morning.

“We have recovered four kg marijuana, four litres of alcohol, 35 cellphones, several chargers and Rs 1.43 lakh cash from his possession,” stated DC (south) Meeraz Khalid. Sources stated in all there have been 29 cell chargers, a great deal of spices used for cooking purposes and even blades. Officially, despite the fact that, law enforcement officials have denied recuperating blades.


According to sources, the doctor assumed that he would escape suspicion as a result of he have been working at one jail or every other for the last 10 years. “We believe Chowdhury used to make a lot of money via promoting the contraband to jail inmates,” stated an officer, adding that the doctor was arrested at the basis of a tip-off from each Kolkata Police and jail authorities. Sources insisted that the accused is also part of the jail extortion racket and the cash he was carrying was part of an extortion payout. The incident comes days after law enforcement officials re-arrested two Dum Dum jail inmates for threatening two buyers of Kestopur and recovered cell phones from their cellular.


“Doctors are usually not checked identical to a few group D staff who've a clout in the jail. He made full use of this and smuggled prohibited items on every occasion he was at the night shift. We can be questioning him to ascertain his modus operandi and determine those from whom he took orders. We do know he has gathered lakhs prior to now few months doing this paintings,” stated an officer.


Sources stated that Alipore jail hospital has two forms of docs in its rolls. “A collection of docs are deputed in the course of the well being department. However, a few years ago, it was found via correctional services and products department that those docs had not been transferred out for over 15 years or extra at a stretch. This helped them become powerful. The well being department was approached and docs from Alipore jail along with a few others have been transferred. But no replacements have been provided. Bengal correctional management minister Ujjal Biswas stated: “He is almost certainly only a small link in a large racket. We are seeking to resolve this. It’s likely that a segment of jail workers are also concerned,” he added. Another officer stated they also found electric heater coils and spices, allegedly intended to be equipped to jail inmates, from Chowdhury’s possession.
