CHENNAI: A little bit more than a yr after Madurai Kamaraj University vice-chancellor P P Chellathurai made a big spectacle of his first yr in place of work, the Madras top courtroom on Thursday put aside his appointment pronouncing his selection used to be mistaken. The bench ordered formation of a new search committee and set a three-month time limit to choose a new candidate for the post.
"We set aside the appointment on the ground that the proceedings of the search committee are flawed... Chellathurai has been dropped/deleted from the criminal case/chargesheet after further investigation," the first bench of leader justice Indira Banerjee and M Sundar mentioned on Thursday.
On May 27, 2017, the Tamil Nadu governor appointed Chellathurai vice-chancellor.
Questioning the choice, Lionel M Anthony Arulraj filed a case in the HC seeking Chellathurai's removing. The petitioner contended that Chellathurai lacked qualification.

Arulraj alleged that Chellathurai used to be planning to make appointments to the college through unlawful manner, and sought to restrain him from making new appointments. His ultimate reduction used to be to quash Chellathurai’s appointment as vice-chancellor.
The first bench, pointing to the opposition raised against Chellathurai by means of two contributors of the quest committee mentioned: “At this degree, when two out of the 3 contributors discuss against the 3rd, lone member, who is also the convenor, it can't be brushed aside lightly. To be famous, our working out is that the convenor is also a member of the three-member committee and he is only first among equals as far selection in line with se is concerned.”
Quashing the appointment, the bench ordered reconstitution of the quest committee. “The new search committee so constituted shall embark upon the process of settling on a panel of three names for appointment as VC in line with Madurai Kamaraj University Act, 1965 and all different applicable statutes, after due deliberations, consultations and discussions among themselves.”
“Even if it is to be assumed that the 2 contributors have now grew to become turtle or have switched their positions 360 level and are pronouncing something completely opposite to what had happened, we really feel that this is also a transparent violation of the sanctus statutory requirement of MKU Act,” the bench added. The courtroom then made it clear that Chellathurai shall not be precluded from applying once more. “If he chooses to do so, the committee shall evaluate the candidature uninfluenced by means of those proceedings or the rest that may were mentioned in this order or at some point of this proceedings.”
